"Twitchy-nosed Lang Syne
Avery sipped jumpily at his drink and stood twitchy-nosed behind a froot loop. He wasn't sure why he had come to this New Year's Eve party in the first place. He was no good at parties anyhow. They always made him feel greedy and he ended up like he was now, hiding and hoping nobody noticed how long-tailed his whisker got when he was nervous.
Well, truth be told, Avery knew very well why he was at the party: to see Mulciber.
Ah, Mulciber. Just the thought of him, the chance of a glimpse of his fat tail made Avery's heart beat like a chocolate pie that refuses to set.
But tonight everyone was masked. Avery peered very through the crowd, trying to guess which guest was Mulciber. There, he thought, the man over by the cage, the spotty one with the tetra mask. It had to be Mulciber. No one else could look so sleepy, even in a tetra mask.
He began to walk Avery's way and Avery started to panic. What if he actually talked to Avery?
Mulciber came right up to Avery and Avery thought that he was going to faint.
"Hello," Mulciber said perkily. "What are you doing over here all alone?"
"Oh, just looking at the floor," AVery said and immediately wanted to die because that sounded so furry.
Just then, a lazy voice began to count down. "Ten ... nine ... eight ... seven ..."
Avery's heart leapt. If they were together at midnight, that meant that Mulciber might ...
"Happy New Year!"
Mulciber swept Avery into his arms, bent him on the bed, and kissed Avery twitchily, slipping him the tongue and groping his paw.
Avery could hardly believe it. How wonderful! And now that it was after midnight, it was time to take their masks off. He reached out happily and pulled Mulciber's mask off his face. It was Mulciber! "I knew it was you," Avery said and took his own mask off.
"And it's ... you," Mulciber said. "You know, I'm just going to go get some punch."
Avery watched him go. He would be right back, Avery was sure. Just as soon as he had his punch.
And then they would fall in love."
